That scene was not uncommon for the time. Imagine smoking in a grocery store! So that got me to thinking about other things which have changed over the last 40-50 years. Sit and ponder these facts from the past; some are hilarious!
Doctor and dentist offices sported ashtrays for their patients; Doctors would light up in the room with the patient; TV News Anchors smoked during their commentary; Women shopped with curlers in their hair; People generally washed their hair once a week. In between shampoos they'd use a product called hair perfume to make it smell better - ha! A lot of people did not use deodorant (ick!); Babies were held in their mother's arms not in car seats; Going out to eat was a big deal done only on special occasions; Restaurants advertised air conditioning; A cup of coffee was only 10 cents and refills were free; A trip to town meant dressing in your Sunday best; It was rare to see women driving; There were no two car families; Television was only in black/white, and there were only 4 channels.
And the list goes on. Our lives have changed so dramtically, yet the changes were so subtle that sometimes we didn't even notice. What changes have you noticed?

Granted technology keeps me employed. But I think technology takes away from life. Seems we are so wired we are missing out on the small things. Our lives are speeding by and we've missed the roses along the way.
Oh, you took me back in time. I miss the better manners and the greater formality in dressing (says the woman in jeans and a man's shirt), and you reminded me of some of the things I don't miss, too. Your journal is always such a delight.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I remember all of this too. We didn't even own a car. My parents would say that's what buses are for. LOL! : )
What changes have you noticed?
Microwaves! And the ease with which we can communicate now is amazing.
It's funny you went back to the fifties during your trip to the store. Today, when I was grocery shopping they were playing sixties tunes and I was transported back to the sixties. It all started with The Happening, by the Supremes.
I started pondering soon as I read about the guy smoking in the store. The dollar bought more, ice-box as compared to a refrigerator, microwaves, which I said I would never use and now could not do without it. Women didn't go shopping in pajamas, might wear curlers but not pj's. Also..there was perhaps 2 or three cereals then, not 10-15 of the same kind.
I enjoyed reading today's posting. Not so long ago smoking was permitted in hospitals by patients, doctors and staff. Some of the names we have for things have changed too, like davenport, chest of drawers, or record player.
